Hip implant alternatives
Before you decide to undergo a total hip replacement surgery, your orthopedic surgeon will try to find other treatment alternatives that might help you avoid or delay the surgery.
Alternatives to hip replacement surgery will likely include an exercise regimen, walking support and taking medication. An exercise program can help build strength in the muscles around your painful hip joint, providing some support and possibly relieving the pain.
A walking aid, such as a cane, can help take the pressure off of a damaged hip and could help delay hip surgery.

When your hip pain doesn’t include inflammation, your doctor may advise you to take acetaminophen to help ease the pain. If your hip pain does include inflammation, treatments may include anti-inflammatory medication, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. When these medications, taken at higher dosages under a doctor’s supervision, don’t seem to relieve the pain, stronger medication may be recommended. An anti-inflammatory medication that includes acetaminophen and a narcotic analgesic, such as codeine, may be required to help relieve the hip joint pain.

Some topical analgesic medications can provide pain relief, as well as nutritional supplements, such as chondroitin and glucosamine. Inform your physician about any medications, including nutritional supplements, you are taking. For hip pain that isn’t relieved by most pain medications, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroid medications, like cortisone or prednisone. Corticosteroid medications are often prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis. There are disadvantages to using corticosteroids; the medications can further damage the joints. They can be injected directly into the joint to attempt to relieve the chronic pain.

A doctor might advise a less intensive joint surgery, rather than having a patient undergo a total hip replacement procedure. One of those procedures, called an osteotomy, involves the cutting and realignment of bone to remove the deteriorated bone and replacing it with a healthier bone surface. The recovery for an osteotomy does take six months to one year, and a total hip replacement surgery may still be required in the future. Hip resurfacing surgery is another hip replacement surgery alternative that is becoming increasingly popular, particularly for younger patients suffering from a hip condition. Rather than replacing the entire hip joint, existing bone within the joint is shaped and capped with an implant.
Before considering any hip treatment alternatives, especially those that involve taking any medications that could cause drug interactions, it is important to discuss them with your physician.
