Will I Need Rehab After Hip Replacement Surgery?

Patients undergoing hip replacement surgery are required to participate in physical therapy following the procedure. Their recovery and therapy begins within hours of the surgery. Part of the reason there is a rush to get the patient moving is to avoid the development of blood clots. However, it is also important to get a patient back on his feet after the procedure because the goal of surgery was to restore normal, pain-free living. The sooner a patient is mobile the faster he can gain a better quality of life.

Physical therapy begins while a patient is still in the hospital. The goals of therapy include walking normally, general mobility including sitting and standing, and strengthening of the body. Patients also receive guidance for dressing, bathing, and other daily tasks during their recovery period. Initial rehabilitation includes simple, gentle movements. Patients might be asked to do leg lifts, heel slides, and ankle presses.

Return Home

Hip replacement surgery typically requires a stay of about three to five days in the hospital. Once a patient is safely able to perform certain tasks, such as using the facilities, he or she can return home. Rehabilitation may continue for several days or weeks in the home, or a patient may be asked to return to the hospital or a physical therapy center for ongoing treatment. This might be required daily or several times per week, depending how quickly the patient is progressing with movement and healing.

Some patients require assistance walking after surgery. They may require a walker for several days or weeks following the procedure. A walker also offers security during this time, as the patient is relearning to move his or her body. As walking ability progresses, many patients transition to using a cane. Remember, prior to surgery, the patient potentially spent years with debilitating arthritic pain. They must learn to use their new, healthy body again, which takes some adjustment. It can take up to six weeks for a patient to feel comfortable and safe walking without any type of assistance.

Returning to Normal Life

It is possible for hip replacement patients to drive after their surgery, but it usually takes at least six weeks for this to occur. Patients should consult with their doctors and conduct a few test drives prior to returning to normal driving.

Finally, many patients are eager to return to work after hip replacement surgery. This can take several months, depending on a person’s work responsibilities. Most consult with their doctors and develop a work release plan that is safe and reasonable, based on their health and the structure of their work day.
