Am I a Candidate for Total Hip Replacement Surgery?
Chronic hip pain can decrease a person’s quality of life, making it difficult to enjoy daily activities. Many people who suffer from debilitating hip problems find themselves less active because of the pain. Osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common causes of hip joint damage. You are likely a prime candidate for hip replacement if you have a family history of osteoarthritis, and you are starting to have mobility problems because of the pain.

Hip replacement surgery candidates come from all walks of life, both women and men, and all ages and activity levels. While patients are usually between 60 to 80 years old, hip replacement surgery isn’t just a procedure performed on senior citizens. Anyone who has frequent hip pain that restricts their ability to enjoy everyday activities, including standing or walking, is a candidate.

Hip pain can often keep people awake at night. The hip joints can become so stiff and painful that even lying down or sitting can be painful. If anti-inflammatory medications or walking support, such as a walker or cane, don’t help ease your hip pain, many doctors will recommend either surgery, or to try other non-surgical treatments first to see if they provide pain relief and allow you to delay the surgery.

Most treatments for hip joint pain is taking anti-inflammatory medications, including ibuprofen. Glucosamine, a supplement, might provide some relief from the pain. Physical therapy can help, often helping to give the patient relief from the stiffness and weakness in the hip joint. If you’ve already tried these non-surgical treatments, you might want to have surgery.

People should not have to suffer and live in pain. Many times surgery is the best option. There are a couple of other less invasive surgeries to consider. Arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure where the hip joint is effectively cleaned up, with loose bone fragments and cartilage pieces removed, providing pain relief. Osteotomy, another surgical procedure, involves the realignment of the hip bones and joint to take pressure off of the hip. Osteotomy sometimes delays the need for hip replacement by about 10 years.

While a total hip replacement surgery will likely relieve your pain and make it easier for you to move, it is not a cure-all procedure. It offers many benefits, but you likely won’t be able to do things you couldn’t do before your hip pain emerged. After surgery, there are certain activities you have to avoid, including jumping and jogging. There also are certain positions that you shouldn’t perform since it could cause your hip joint to become dislocated.
