Complications of Hip Resurfacing Surgery
Hip resurfacing surgery is similar in some ways to a traditional hip replacement. The diseased joint is replaced with a metal joint system that is implanted into the patient’s pelvis.
While the incision and recovery is similar, the mechanics behind the surgery are different. A metal cap is placed over the femoral ball, rather than removing it, leaving much of the bone in place. Hip resurfacing surgery has few major complications, but there isn’t a definitive answer on whether this surgery is superior to traditional hip replacement. The current hip resurfacing implants have only been used for about a decade, so there isn’t much long-term data to draw upon.

The most common complications associated with hip resurfacing are a loosening of the hip implant, a bone or implant fracture or the release of metal ions into the body from the metal implants. Just like traditional hip implants, a hip resurfacing implant may become loose and fail over time. If the implant becomes loose, the patient will likely need to undergo a traditional hip replacement surgery. A loose hip implant can become painful.
Bone fractures are also a common complication of hip resurfacing surgery. These fractures can occur around the hip implant, reducing the structural integrity of the hip joint. Bone fractures occur in about 1 percent to 20 percent of patients, which has left some orthopedic surgeons to question the hip resurfacing procedure. Fractures occur more commonly in patients who have thin or poor quality bone or are obese. Women also more commonly suffer bone fractures as a hip resurfacing complication than men. Bone fractures also occur more frequently when the orthopedic surgeon isn’t as experienced in performing hip resurfacing.

Despite technological advances in joint replacement, all hip implants do wear out over time. While metal implants appear to wear out less often than implants made of plastic, metal implants can release metal ions into the body. While the effect of these metal ions on a patient isn’t yet known, there are concerns about these metal particles, particularly cobalt and chromium that can enter the bloodstream. A hip resurfacing patient can expect to experience a similar recovery period to those who have total hip replacement, although hip resurfacing patients often have a decreased risk of suffering a hip dislocation during recovery. During the year following surgery, patients are often advised to avoid high impact activities, such as running, lifting and jumping.
