FAQ
Understanding Osteoarthritis, the Leading Cause of Hip Replacement
Like many of the other weight-bearing joints in your body, your hip joints are at risk for osteoarthritis, a common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and often develops in patients as they age. It is the primary reason most patients need hip replacement surgery. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage around the joints deteriorate, causing swelling and pain, often in a patient’s hips and knees. Cartilage is a rubber-like covering on the ends of bones in joints. When the cartilage deteriorates over time, the joints end up with bone-on-bone contact that can cause chronic pain for the patient. The pain can vary from a dull ache to sharp pain. The hip joint can often feel stiff and can become immobile.
What causes osteoarthritis is not known, but there are several factors that contribute to the joint inflammation and pain, including injuries, aging and obesity. Osteoarthritis also can be caused by genetic defects or because of stress placed on the hip joint from weight-bearing activities or because the patient gained weight. If you feel you may be suffering from osteoarthritis, it is important to make an appointment with your doctor. While there isn’t a test for diagnosing osteoarthritis, your doctor can find out about your medical history and give you a physical exam to determine whether you may have osteoarthritis. Your doctor may also order imaging tests, such as x-rays, or even blood tests to rule out other medical conditions.
While your doctor may recommend non-invasive surgical treatments to treat your osteoarthritis, the last resort is for a total hip replacement surgery. The goal of treating this disease is to improve your mobility and functioning of the hip, while also controlling the pain associated with this degenerative hip disease.
Non-surgical treatments may include:
• Rest
• Using a walking aid, such as a cane, to take some of the pressure off the arthritis hip joint
• Taking pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications to help relieve the pain and swelling
• Losing weight to take the extra pressure off your hip
• Exercising, to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint
If you need total hip replacement surgery, you’re not alone. It is one of the most common forms of joint replacement surgeries in the United States. The surgical procedure involves replacing the damaged hip joint, replacing it with an artificial ball and socket system made of either metal, ceramic, plastic or a combination of those durable materials.
Hip resurfacing also may be an option. The surgical procedure is similar to total hip replacement, except that the femur bone remains intact but the joint surfaces are removed and replaced with a metal hip implant. Osteoarthritis may be prevented in some patients by maintaining a healthy weight and exercising.
