Will a Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Cause Any Complications for My Everyday Life?

Most people sail through a metal-on-metal hip replacement surgery. These surgeries are common and rather straightforward. Other than a somewhat long recovery period, the surgery is usually simple and the recovery predictable.

After your surgery and recovery period is over, you will find that having a prosthetic hip will force you to make lifestyle changes. You will want to think through the possible inconveniences before you have your metal-on-metal hip replacement so you will be prepared for the necessary adjustments.

Possibility of Dislocation
While you’ll be relieved to walk without pain, you will also need to realize your limitations. Artificial hips can come apart pretty easily. That metal ball slides around pretty easily in that metal socket, and a slip in the wrong direction can result in a painful dislocation.

While a hip dislocation in and of itself isn’t the end of the world, it can result in serious medical problems. If you dislocate your hip, you might fall and break a bone. The older you are, the more serious a fall. Even if you are young and healthy, a dislocated hip will usually result in cartilage, tissue or bone damage.

This means you’ll need to adjust the way you sit, stand, bend and exercise. You will need to learn what your limitations are so you don’t risk dislocation.

Preservation of Your New Hip
You will also need to be aware that your metal-on-metal hip replacement implant will not last forever. You will wear our your artificial hip quickly if you do not manage your weight, limit vigorous exercise, limit the climbing of stairs and avoid lifting anything heavy. If you take on too much, the metal ball will rub against the metal socket of your new hip joint, wearing away the metal bit by bit. You will need to alter your lifestyle such that you minimize wear and tear on your hip joint.

Watch for Signs of Metal Sensitivity
If you get a metal-on-metal hip replacement, you may end up with health issues related to metals ions in your bloodstream. Some people tolerate metal implants well and have absolutely no problems at all, but some people find they experience changes in overall health. You will need to watch out for changes in your kidney, thyroid, heart and mental health. If you don’t experience any adverse reactions, you should be fine, but some people find they have to get a hip revision surgery because they can’t tolerate the side effects of the metal implant.

Life With an Artificial Hip
In most cases you’ll find that you can adjust to the complications an artificial hip will bring. Just talk to your doctor about how he or she thinks your metal-on-metal hip replacement may affect your life so you know what to expect ahead of time.
