Why Should I Replace My Hip Replacement?

It is fairly common for people to assume hip replacements last forever. The average person unfamiliar with the replacement procedure likely thinks a metal replacement is more durable than natural bone, but this is not the case. If given enough time, all hip replacement devices will wear out and need to be replaced. This is why replacement is much more common for those who had their replacements installed at an earlier age. They have used their replacement longer and the additional years of wear and tear lead to it breaking down.

There are several reasons hip replacements fail. Replacement devices are much stronger than they used to be. In the past, the metals and plastics used in implants were not as sturdy as those used today. Over time, this has changed, as have the materials and methods used to secure an implant in place.

Another reason a replacement might need replacing is because of infection. This, too, is less common than it used to be because the process for insertion is more sterile. The more experience surgeons have implanting devices the more they learn about making the procedure safe. However, infection does still occur and if you should suffer an infection caused by your implant, you may need to have it replaced.

The most common reason implants need replacing is because of the weakening of the bone around the implant. This is caused by the wearing down and fragmenting of the implant. These tiny pieces irritate the surrounding tissue, creating holes that lead to weakness. This process is called osteolysis.

Efforts are being made to prevent osteolysis from occurring. New devices tend to produce smaller particles from wear, and smaller particles mean less debris and irritation. The overall wear is less, too, since the particles falling away are smaller. Researchers are still not positive if these sturdier implants will lead to less loosening, but they are hoping this is the case.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine precisely the best type of implant for a patient. Over time, a person’s body changes and an implant that was once successful can cause problems many years later. These problems can trigger the need for a replacement device and a second surgery. Instead of a second implant, a patient might need hip replacement revision surgery, which is also a complicated procedure.

If you have concerns about the loosening of your implant or you are experiencing symptoms and you think you might need to replace your hip implant, speak with your doctor as soon as possible.
